People, for some reason, correlate drinking alcohol with being unhealthy. Although some alcohol is bad (caloric and carb) there are alternatives that are just as tasty. (I assume, I am not a drinker, I am just looking at calories and carbs). All things in moderation as well… drinking certain types of alcohol in moderation may actually have health benefits that you are unaware of! People usually thinking the actual drinking is unhealthy, but that doesn’t have to be the case. Yes, if you binge drink excessively that can be dangerous. When people decide to try a new diet, or lose weight, alcohol is one of the first things they choose to cut out of their diet, but doesn’t have to be. Tequila Which do you think is lower in calories? Tequila or Smirnoff Vodka? Well, the answer might surprise you, it might not. Tequila has many known benefits to your health and is lower in calories. The natural sugars that are found in Tequila are called Agavins. These sugars are not digestible so guess what they act as? You got it! Fiber… and it won’t raise your blood sugars either. Agavins have also been accredited for lowering cholesterol and in moderation can fit into any weight loss program because it can help you lose weight; and just so you know, when I say shot of tequila, I’m saying 1oz. Red Red Wine All wines turn into sugar and that’s not good, however the polyphenols, resveratrol, and quercetin (active compounds) in red wine have been shown by University of Massachusetts Amherst to improve overall heart health. Bob Marley had it right when he stated “Red Red Wine goes to my head” the red wine was proven to slow down the glucose from hitting the bloodstream which stopped the insulin spikes and helps against a quick buzz, however, as with tequila, all in moderation. A moderate amount of Red Wine would be a serving size of 5oz. Rum When I did drink, many years ago, I liked coconut or fruity drinks… which paired well with rum. Rum is made from molasses and other sugarcane byproducts, and can help with mental health and in moderation help reduce anxiety. Standard serving is 1.5 oz. Studies show that Rum can actually level out your stress and anxiety which lowers blood pressure and relaxes your mind and body, as far as caloric intake it has less than 100 calories per serving (1.5 oz) and has no fat, sodium or cholesterol, once again in moderation!!!! Did you know that rum was used “back in the day” as an antiseptic? you can even put rum on wounds to keep bacteria at bay. Remember in the shows where in WWII they told someone drink this and bite this stick. That was rum! Rum can actually make you feel less pain (which has good and bad points). Rum has also not only shown affective on Alzheimer’s and dementia but heart disease as well. I went to a conference for Revital U and Anjana Srivastava the Chief Science Officer stated that people are sleep deprived. Rum has also been linked to better night sleep. (DO NOT MIX ALCOHOL WITH ANY MEDICINES) 1.5 oz of rum is very moderate amount, so please remember the words IN MODERATION. Rum can increase your life span and help with cold and flu symptoms by having immune boosting, disease fighting properties that can help you stay healthy. Whiskey One serving of Whiskey has as many antioxidants as a glass of wine. Although it tastes horrible, in my opinion, it does help with a cold, from personal experience and it also has been known to fight off cancer. Whiskey contains ellagic acid which removes toxins from your body and protects against and absorbs rogue cells. Rosé Rosé does more for you than provide a calm restful evening with friends. The wine has been proven to have loads of health benefits. The polyphenols in rosé have been shown to prevent atherosclerosis, a major contributor to heart disease. Rosé is known to have anti-inflammatory properties and can help with other issues involving inflammation. Champagne Have you been having issues with your memory here lately? Then try Champagne. This drink may possibly enhance your memory and the quality of your skin! So next time you go drinking but you are on a diet, do not think of these drinks as “added sugar”, think of them as health beneficial super drinks, and always remember to drink responsibly and in moderation.
